Phillip Trier, 46, will be executive vice president, head of Corporate and Commercial Banking, reporting directly to President and CEO Andy Harmening. Trier joined the company in December 2023 to accelerate core Commercial Middle Market business development across the company's major metropolitan markets and lead its equipment finance and leasing vertical, and commercial deposit and treasury management sales and service strategies. In his elevated role, Trier will lead all aspects of Associated's Commercial banking, creating a unified structure to ensure alignment across this business line and will continue to be based in the Twin Cities.

Additionally, Warsek created the Institutional and Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) groups in 2014 to strategically build out the bank's commercial real estate capabilities in the fund, corporate real estate and public REIT markets and has successfully led Associated's CRE offices and loan production as group leader since 2022.

Warsek will continue reporting to Paul Schmidt, head of Commercial Real Estate and Facilities, until March 2025. At that time, Schmidt will step down from the ELT as head of CRE and Facilities but remain as Twin Cities market president and advisor to CRE and Facilities until the end of 2025, when he plans to retire.

Trier earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. John's University and is a graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School. In 2001, the National Cancer Institute's SELECT trial sought to determine if an antioxidant vitamin E supplement could successfully treat or prevent prostate cancer. The trial involving 35,000 men was planned to last up to 12 years. However, after just three years, participants were told to stop taking their supplements. Not only had vitamin E failed to slow or prevent prostate cancer—more men taking the supplement started to get the disease. Seeing these results, Trotman thought, 'If an antioxidant failed, maybe a pro-oxidant would work.' His new findings in mice show just that.

When mice with prostate cancer are given menadione, it messes with the cancer's survival processes. Trotman's team has discovered that menadione kills prostate cancer cells by depleting a lipid called PI(3)P, which works like an ID tag. Without it, the cells stop recycling incoming materials and eventually explode. Trotman explains:

"It's like a transport hub, like JFK. If everything that goes in is immediately de-identified, nobody knows where the airplanes should go next. New stuff keeps coming in, and the hub starts to swell. This ultimately leads to the cell bursting."

This causes the cancer's progression to slow significantly in mice. Trotman now hopes to see the experiment translated to pilot studies in human prostate cancer patients:

"Our target group would be men who get biopsies and have an early form of the disease diagnosed. We wonder if they start to take the supplement, whether we would be able to slow that disease down."

Amazingly, Trotman's research suggests menadione may also prove effective against myotubular myopathy, a rare condition that prevents muscle growth in infant boys. Those diagnosed rarely live beyond early childhood. Trotman's lab has found that depleting PI(3)P with menadione can double the lifespan of mice with this condition.

If the results hold up in humans, it would mean that men with prostate cancer can enjoy a better quality of life and more time with their families. It could also mean more precious time for children born with an incurable disease.

A probationary license was received on August 3, 2024 which allowed the facility to operate and then be audited by the Department of Children and Family Services. The audit occurred on October 3, 2024 and the permanent license was issued on October 21, 2024.

The ARIA Boca facility is a two-floor treatment center licensed for 11 beds of Inpatient Detoxification and 12 Beds of Residential Level 1. We have submitted the full license to our contracted insurers to begin treatment of insured patients at our ARIA Boca location. Our total bed count in Florida increases from 62 to 85 with 47 for Detox/Residential and 38 for PHP/IOP.

The Company previously reported that ARIA Boca would be revenue generating in the third quarter, anticipating that we would bill existing in-network insurers for our clients using the probationary license, which turned out not to be the case. Revenue will be generated from ARIA Boca as soon as the insurers add the facility to our contracts, we anticipate we will generate revenues from ARIA Boca in the 4^th quarter of 2024.

Ethema's third quarter results will be reported in mid-November. Our ARIA subsidiary increased revenues for Q3 2024 by approximately 18% over Q2 2024 and an impressive approximately 30% over Q3 2023.

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Researchers at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) announced significant findings in the treatment of neuroblastoma, a cancer of the peripheral nervous system that usually occurs as a solid tumor in a child's chest or abdomen. The study offers insights that could lead to new, personalized medicine approaches in immunotherapy treatment. The findings were published today in the journal Cancer Cell.

Neuroblastoma is the most common cancer in infants, accounting for a disproportionate share of pediatric cancer deaths. Currently, monoclonal antibody-based immunotherapy is the only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment for neuroblastoma. However, this type of immunotherapy can cause painful side effects, and patients often relapse. All these factors led researchers to seek new and innovative approaches to treating this disease and safely improve cure rates.

In this study, researchers used a multi-omics approach to analyze and identify potential new targets for immunotherapy, integrating proteomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic data to pinpoint biologically relevant proteins on the surfaces of cancer cells that are visible to the immune system. Reviewing comprehensive data helps scientists understand how cells function and what goes wrong in diseases like cancer.

Based on their findings, the researchers prioritized the protein, Delta-like canonical notch ligand 1 (DLK1). They showed that high expression of DLK1 in cancer cells promotes tumor growth and discovered how neuroblastoma cells increase DLK1 levels. They also found that DLK1 is produced at a higher rate in many childhood and adult cancers.

"Our study demonstrates the power of an integrative multi-omics approach to identify immunotherapeutic targets," said senior author, Sharon J. Diskin, PhD, a member of the Center for Childhood Cancer Research and Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics at CHOP and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

The researchers subsequently studied a novel treatment called ADCT-701, an antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) that delivers a potent therapy targeting DLK1-expressing cancer cells, as part of the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Pediatric Preclinical in Vivo Testing (PIVOT) Program. They demonstrated that ADCT-701 was highly effective in eradicating highly resistant patient-derived tumors. The NCI is currently conducting a phase 1 clinical trial for treatment of neuroendocrine neoplasms with ADCT-701 in adults 18 and older.

"Our findings provided important validation and preclinical data to support an ongoing first-in-human DLK1-directed immunotherapy clinical trial for adult patients diagnosed with neuroendocrine neoplasms, including neuroblastoma," said the study's primary author, Amber Hamilton, PhD, a post-doctoral fellow at CHOP. "This research brings hope to families, offering the potential for more effective treatments."

Two Jacksonville University Davis College of Business and Technology marketing professors, Drs. Irina Toteva and Selen Savas-Hall, uncovered in their new research that consumers will feel a stronger connection to a company or a brand if they put effort into creating something with that company or brand through a third-party app.

The marketing duo recently had their research, "Perceived Effort in the Co-Creation of Electronic Services and Influence on Brand Loyalty: The Case of Food Ordering Apps" published in Services Marketing Quarterly.

"This is the first research to investigate the role of perceived effort in electronic services and the influence on brand loyalty," said Toteva, a JU assistant professor of marketing. "Our research explains about the mechanism of brand loyalty, which is in part due to the labor-to-love effect, where effort translates into attachment to the item."

Another interesting finding of this study is that the risk that is involved in using a technology may also be seen as effort. The Davis College professors showed that when consumers perceive higher risk using a third-party app, they show higher brand loyalty to the service provider.

Perceived risk refers to the uncertainty or potential negative outcomes associated with buying and using a product or service. In the case of food-ordering apps, consumers may view the use of technology as risky, fearing issues like privacy breaches or service failures.

"Our study finds that perceived risk can actually enhance brand loyalty," shared Toteva. "When consumers take on this risk and it turns out positively (e.g., the food is delivered successfully), they feel more loyal to the brand as a result of overcoming that uncertainty. This risk mitigation further solidifies their attachment to the brand."

Toteva got the idea for the research when she was scrolling through Instagram on her phone.

"I clicked on a promoted post that took me to the sales page of a clothing brand. I started adding some items to my shopping cart, and it occurred to me that this was an effort on my part—I was using my time and energy to evaluate the items and decide if I wanted to add any of them to my cart," she recalled. "I became curious if this labor-to-love effect could be applicable to consumers who use apps for the ordering of products or services like food."

The study explores how consumers who order food on an app (such as Uber Eats or Door Dash) perceive the level of effort they contribute to the order and how that perceived effort influences their attachment to the restaurant provider.

"We show that those consumers who perceive they have made an effort into ordering their food are more likely to feel they are continuing to build a relationship with the restaurant provider, and as a result they are more brand loyal to that service provider, compared to consumers who perceive less of an effort," said Savas-Hall, a JU associate professor of marketing and international business.

While the use of technology (such as food-ordering apps) in the service ordering process can be perceived as automatic and effortless, some consumers perceive the process as effortful, and consequently, they are more aware that they are co-creating the service with the restaurant provider.

"When consumers feel like they are co-creating the service with the food service provider, this shows their willingness to invest resources into their relationship with the food service provider," explained Toteva. "At the same time, by using the app and putting effort into the order, consumers feel improved self-efficacy (i.e., their confidence in their ability to perform tasks) as they are able to reach their goals through effort, compared to consumers who do not perceive effort in the ordering process."

The findings of this research are important to consumers and to service industries, such as food, groceries and fashion, where companies co-create various offerings with their customers.

"This study is applicable to any company that provides technology tools to its customers to assist them in the service ordering process. For example, scheduling a service through an app such as a haircut appointment or a fitness class, or using a food-ordering app to order products or using a rideshare app for transportation are all efforts on the side of consumers," said Savas-Hall.

This study shows that if consumers are made aware that they contribute to the service, then this perceived effort can turn into a 'love' and later into brand loyalty to the service provider. As a result, emphasizing the effort made by consumers may be well-received as a positive reinforcement and may create a special connection to the service provider. The co-researchers say this study also shows that the effort does not need to be entirely physical, and that mental effort also counts.

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Gaudenzia, Inc., one of the country's largest nonprofit treatment providers for people with substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring conditions, released its 2024 annual FrontLine Report today. The FrontLine Report is the only annual, comprehensive and data-driven look at SUD trends, county-by-county, in the Mid-Atlantic region where Gaudenzia operates over 50 facilities and provides over 120 licensed treatment programs to more than 15,800 admissions.

First launched in 2021, the report highlights Gaudenzia's ongoing efforts to provide a full continuum of care for SUD and expand treatment accessibility while spotlighting emerging trends in SUD care across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C.

The report was unveiled today by Gaudenzia leadership at a news conference in Philadelphia.

Key findings from the 2024 FrontLine report include:

• Increased Treatment Admissions: Admissions to Gaudenzia's treatment programs increased by 5 percent to 15,855 from 15,045 in FY-23.
• Growth in Older Adult Admissions: The number of adults aged 55 and older seeking treatment increased by 3 percent in FY-24, for a total increase of 8 percent over FY-22.
• High Prevalence of Mental Health Diagnoses: 70.3 percent of individuals completing biopsychosocial assessments reported a past mental health diagnosis.
• Alcohol and Opioid Use Disorder Lead Diagnoses: Both alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder remain the leading diagnoses at admission at 31 percent each.

While Gaudenzia saw increased admissions to its treatment programs, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) notes that over 94 percent of individuals over the age of 18 with a SUD did not receive or seek treatment in 2023 – emphasizing more work needs to be done to ensure individuals receive available treatment.

"We need to understand why so many people struggling with SUD are not getting the treatment they need," continued Dr. Gilbert. "By evaluating data, we can identify addressable barriers to care including lack of transportation, treatment options, and financial need."

Increasing access to evidence-based care is a priority for Gaudenzia, whose mission is to promote long-term recovery regardless of individual circumstances. This includes:

Meeting the Needs of Women and Families

Since 1979, Gaudenzia has been a pioneer in offering SUD treatment specifically designed for women with children, such as family-centered treatment programs like the Claymont Center for Pregnant and Parenting Women, the only treatment program of its kind in Delaware. In 2023, the cohort of women served at Claymont was primarily between the ages of 25-44, with nearly 60 percent reporting an opioid use disorder – underscoring a significant need for medications for opioid use disorder access for pregnant and parenting women.

Addressing Barriers to Access

To increase access for more individuals, Gaudenzia has implemented several new programs, including the launch of Driving Recovery for PA, Pennsylvania's only mobile licensed narcotic treatment program and the introduction of open-access treatment models at key sites.

The FrontLine report also affirms an industry-wide trend of significant racial disparities in access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Research shows that MAT is an effective approach in treating SUD that reduces relapse and overdose rates, but white clients were prescribed MAT at more than twice the rate of Black patients in both the six months before and after a SUD-related health emergency. Gaudenzia continues to address this disparity by advocating for equitable treatment options, working to repair relationships with the communities we serve, and providing culturally competent care and harm reduction services.

Providing Complex Care Through Innovative Solutions

Gaudenzia has seen an uptick in admissions of adults over the age of 55 for the second consecutive year – which reflects the national trend of overdose deaths among adults over the age of 65 quadrupling over the last two decades. Gaudenzia is urging for Medicare reforms to expand coverage of SUD treatment, improve access to MAT, and expand coverage to include community-based treatment settings.

The 2024 report data also shows that polysubstance use remains common, with 45 percent of individuals with a secondary SUD reporting a stimulant use disorder. Gaudenzia is expanding its usage of the Matrix Model, a treatment approach designed to treat stimulant use disorder by integrating multiple evidence-based therapies to provide individualized care.

Offering Housing as Healthcare Integration

Access to stable housing remains a critical component of recovery. In FY-24, Gaudenzia served 2,813 individuals through its emergency, transitional, and permanent supportive housing programs.

The report also highlights how Gaudenzia treatment centers serve a diverse client base across various demographics, including gender, age, and race/ethnicity in various counties and programs. Out of more than 15,800 admissions served across the organization, 44 percent of admissions served were white, 42 percent were Black/African American, 6 percent were Hispanic, and 6 percent were Multiracial.

The county-by-county data in the FrontLine Report comes as the CDC reported 107,543 drug overdose deaths in the calendar year 2023.

"After two election cycles with a relatively low number of state ballot measures, we've witnessed a marked increase this year, driven largely by citizen-initiated measures," said Ryan Byrne, Ballotpedia managing editor. • Abortion: On November 5, 2024, voters will decide on 11 abortion-related ballot measures—the most on record for a single year. Ten would provide for state constitutional rights to abortion: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Nevada, and South Dakota. One, in Nebraska, would limit the timeframe for when an abortion can be performed.
• Electoral Systems: Ballot initiatives have played a prominent role in proposing changes to state and local electoral systems across the United States. In 2024, voters will decide on a record number of statewide ballot measures on ranked-choice voting—Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Missouri, Nevada, and Oregon. Other electoral system changes are on the ballot, including competing measures in Arizona, two in Montana, and a top-two primaries initiative in South Dakota.
• Citizenship: Bans on noncitizen voting at the state level have become more frequent since 2018. From 2018 to 2022, voters in six states approved ballot measures banning noncitizen voting. In 2024, eight state legislatures referred constitutional amendments to the ballot to prohibit the state or local governments from allowing non-citizen voting. Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Wisconsin are the eight states.

Sixty-eight percent is the highest recorded approval rate for Trump among Cuban Americans on the FIU Cuba Poll, which is the longest running survey of Cuban Americans in the country, tracking the community since 1991. The 2016 poll registered 35% approval for Trump, while the 2020 came in at 59%. The 2024 approval rate is also greater than the actual Cuban American vote for Trump in the last two presidential elections.

"It seems that the Trump train is still picking up passengers on Calle Ocho," said Guillermo Grenier, lead investigator on the Cuba Poll and a professor of sociology in the Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies at the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs, which sponsors the poll along with FIU's Cuban Research Institute. "Cuban Americans born outside of Cuba being the exception, the Cuban American community remains loyal to the Republican Party and the Trump version of it."

The 2024 Cuba Poll surveyed 1,001 Cuban Americans in Miami-Dade County by phone between September 25 and October 9. Questions about the election were posed only to the likely voters (U.S. Citizens) among the responders.

While Republicans continue to maintain a majority among registered Cuban American voters (55%), Cuban Americans born outside of Cuba are divided in their party allegiance: 38% are registered Republicans, 33% are Democrats and 26% are Independents (No Party Affiliation).

In the Florida senate election, U.S. Senator Rick Scott is expected to receive 50% of the Cuban American vote, while challenger Debbie Mucarsel-Powell will garner approximately 19% of the decided voters. A relatively large undecided segment (22%) makes the race for the U.S. Senate seat closer than expected, given Scott's previous overwhelming support from the community.

On other issues, including U.S. policy toward Cuba, there is much more diversity of opinion. Democratic and Republican supporters differ in their evaluation of the most important issues facing the country.

For Republican supporters, the top issues, ranked, are: (1) the economy, (2) immigration, (3) access to health care, (4) relations with China, (5) relations with Russia, (6) relations with Cuba, (7) race relations, (8) assault weapons accessibility and (9) access to safe abortion care.

For Democrats, the top issues are (1) access to health care, (2) access to safe abortion care, (3) the economy, (4) assault weapons accessibility, (5) race relations, (6) immigration, (7) relations with Russia, (8) relations with Cuba and (9) relations with China.

On the issue of the U.S. embargo against Cuba, 55% of Cuban Americans in South Florida support its continuation, although they also show relatively high support for some engagement policies such as the selling of food (61% support) and medicine (69% support) to the island. Support for the continuation of the embargo drops to 43% among Cuban Americans not born on the island.

"This year's findings confirm a long trend of Cuban American support for a sophisticated policy approach that combines sanctions against the regime while engaging with the Cuban people," said Sebastian Arcos, interim director of the Cuban Research Institute. "Cuban Americans have a better grasp of the issues and policy trade-offs involved than most experts and policy makers. Maintaining the U.S. embargo is at the core of this approach, which largely explains Cuban American's traditional inclinations toward the Republican Party and strong support for Donald Trump's policies."

It also fostered new partnerships with the U.S. Space Force and gained admission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as an Observer NGO. In addition, USRA strengthened advocacy for the university space research community and created formal mechanisms to better harness the scientific and technical expertise resident in its 121-member Council of Institutions. USRA also established the Earth from Space Institute, which leverages remote sensing data to address urgent sustainability challenges, and the HBCU S&T Council, which fosters collaborative opportunities for R&D among HBCU faculty and students, USRA, and the federal government. Isaacson also led USRA to relocate its headquarters from Columbia, MD to Washington, DC, increasing institutional engagement with the federal government.

Most recently, USRA announced the formation of E Street Technologies LLC, a for-profit, wholly owned subsidiary aimed at strengthening collaborations with industry, mentoring small-business partners, and offering more opportunities to serve USRA's long-standing federal customers.

During Dr. Isaacson's tenure, USRA received a 2021 Top Nonprofit Workplaces Award and 2024 Top Workplaces Awards for Culture Excellence and Work-Life Flexibility. USRA also expanded its Distinguished Undergraduate Awards program in both number and dollar value and grew to its all-time high in revenue and headcount.

DULUTH, Ga., Oct. 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Boehringer Ingelheim announced the grand opening of its newly expanded research and development facility in Athens, Georgia. As the largest animal health company in Georgia, this Boehringer state-of-the-art facility reflects the company's commitment to innovation and improving the health and well-being of animals.

With a capital investment of $66.1 million and 63 new jobs created, this expansion includes the addition of 63,000 square feet of administrative space and over 28,000 square feet of laboratory space in Athens-Clarke County. This expansion sets the stage for groundbreaking discoveries and serves as a beacon of creativity across all disease areas and modalities, shaping the future of animal health.

"Our new research and development facility in Athens marks a significant milestone in our dedication to animal health innovation," said Peter Ploeger, U.S. Animal Health Country Managing Director at Boehringer Ingelheim. "Each year, we invest nearly 12 percent of our sales into researching and developing products that will advance the health of animals, especially our pets, for generations to come."

Boehringer's expanded Athens facility represents the company's largest R&D site in the U.S. and its third largest globally.
